Understanding the SMS Validation Report

The SMS Validation Report identifies donor records with phone numbers that may not be suitable for SMS outreach. The report helps organizations improve deliverability, clean up records with wrong numbers, and identify donors who may no longer have any valid contact method available.

This report only includes donors whose phone numbers were recently validated and were found to have an SMS delivery issue or were identified as a wrong number.

What is Validation?

Validation is an automated API process where phone numbers in Version2 are sent to Twilio (the vendor partner Version2 uses for SMS) to confirm that the number is able to receive text messages.

All phone numbers are validated upon introduction to the portfolio (importing a new portfolio, or adding a new donor at any time triggers this process) as well as at the beginning of each month (for all donors with an Active status in the portfolio).

When validation occurs, Version2 logs the time and date of the most recent validation.

What is the Validation Report?

The Validation Report is a csv file that can be delivered to you through the standard SFTP file delivery process with information on each Active donor's ability to receive communications through SMS.

What Records Are Included in the Report?

A donor will appear in the Validation Report if all of the following are true:

  • A phone number exists on the donor record in Version2.
  • The phone number was validated since the last time the report was generated.
  • The phone number either:
    • Cannot receive SMS messages as identified through Twilio's deliverability screening
    • Has been identified as a wrong number through the outreach process.

As a result, the report is exception-based and only contains records requiring review or potential data cleanup.

Since all active donors are re-validated monthly and the validation date triggers inclusion on the report, you will continue to see any invalid number that has not been cleaned up (removed or updated) in the first file of the month.

The SMS Validation Report is a scheduled report and is typically set up on the same cadence as your Data Return File and delivered to you through SFTP. The first file you receive will include ALL invalid/incorrect phone numbers in the Version2 system, and subsequent files will only contain NEW invalid/incorrect phone numbers.

Field Definitions

Organization Name

The name of the organization associated with the donor record (your organization).

CRM ID

The donor's unique identifier in your CRM.

Current Status

The donor's current engagement status within the platform.

Possible values:

Status Definition
Active Currently eligible for outreach and engagement.
Inactive Not currently active in outreach workflows.
Graduated Has moved to the portfolio of a human gift officer.

Donor Name

The donor's full name.

Cell Number

The phone number currently stored on the donor record, which is the number that was validated.

Valid

Indicates whether the phone number is recognized as a real, valid phone number.

Possible values:

Value Definition
TRUE The phone number exists and is valid.
FALSE The phone number is invalid or does not exist.

Important: A number can be valid but still be unable to receive text messages. For example, a landline is a valid phone number but is not SMS deliverable.

Carrier Type

Provides additional detail about the type of phone number and whether SMS delivery is expected to succeed.

Carrier Type SMS Status
Deliverable - Mobile Can receive SMS messages.
Deliverable - Fixed VoIP Can generally receive SMS messages.
Deliverable - Non-Fixed VoIP Can generally receive SMS messages.
Undeliverable - Landline Cannot receive SMS messages.
Undeliverable - Toll Free SMS delivery not supported.
Undeliverable - Personal SMS delivery not supported.
Undeliverable - Premium SMS delivery not supported.
Undeliverable - Voicemail SMS delivery not supported.
Undeliverable - Shared Cost SMS delivery not supported.
Undeliverable - UAN SMS delivery not supported.
Undeliverable - Pager SMS delivery not supported.
Undeliverable - Unknown Unable to verify SMS capability.
Not Validated Validation data is unavailable.

Deliverable

Indicates whether an SMS message can be delivered to the phone number.

Possible values:

Value Definition
TRUE SMS messages can be delivered to the number.
FALSE SMS messages cannot be delivered to the number.

A number may be undeliverable because it is a landline, inactive, unsupported, or otherwise unable to receive text messages.

Validated Date

The date and time the phone number was most recently validated.

This helps determine when the validation result was obtained and triggers inclusion on the report.

Wrong Number?

Indicates whether the phone number appears to belong to someone other than the intended donor.

Possible values:

Value Definition
TRUE The number has been identified as incorrect for the donor.
FALSE No evidence suggests the number belongs to someone else.

A number may be flagged as a wrong number through phone validation services or when outreach responses indicate that the recipient is not the intended donor.

Wrong Reason

Provides additional context about why a phone number was flagged as a wrong number. If the entry indicates "phone_invalid" that means that the phone number doesn't exist.

Unreachable

Indicates whether the donor no longer has any valid outreach channel available.

Possible values:

Value Definition
TRUE The donor has an invalid or undeliverable SMS number and no valid email address available for outreach.
FALSE At least one valid outreach channel remains available.

This field helps identify records that may require additional research, data enrichment, or contact information updates before future engagement can occur.

If a donor does have a valid email on file, outreach will automatically switch to email outreach until a new number has been provided. Once a new phone number is provided, the system will validate that number and if SMS messages can be received, the system will return to texting the donor.

How to Use This Report

The SMS Validation Report is designed to support ongoing data hygiene and outreach effectiveness. Common uses include:

  • Removing invalid phone numbers from donor records.
  • Correcting records identified as wrong numbers.
  • Identifying landlines and other non-textable phone numbers.
  • Prioritizing data cleanup efforts.
  • Identifying donors who are currently unreachable because no valid SMS or email contact information exists.

Regular review of this report can improve outreach performance and help ensure communications are reaching the intended recipients.
